Application Requirements
Applicants will need to complete one (1) digital application with all of the necessary items to be considered for admission. Applicants may apply in two (2) areas, but, if accepted by both areas, applicants may only choose one (1) arts area to focus their efforts during their time in the Academy
A COMPLETE APPLICATION MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING ITEMS:

No hardcopies of the application will be available this year.

Two completed evaluation forms/references (sent from ‘rjones@fsd1.org’ after application has been submitted. Please allow 1-3 days for processing.

The evaluator must be someone other than a relative and should be a teacher or arts (music, art, drama, etc.) teacher you have had within the past year.

In the application, you will give the names and email addresses of two people who can provide references.

Once the application is received, a digital reference form will be sent to the evaluators. The applicant will not be responsible for obtaining references/evaluations.

Applications Instructions
Applicants must:

Be a resident of Florence 1 Schools. Out of zone students may apply.

Acceptance will be finalized for out of zone students pending approval of the superintendent or his designee. The school will provide additional information upon acceptance.

Complete an official Southside Middle School Fine Arts and Technology Academy application form. Applications will be available online (see "APPLY NOW" tab) and are due by December 31 at 5:00 PM on the Southside Middle School website.

The two digital evaluation forms must be completed (Information for references is given as part of the application). A recent academic teacher must complete one form and, if possible, an arts teacher related to the area of application should complete one. However, both evaluators may be academic teachers. Relatives and family friends should not be asked to complete evaluations.

During auditions, accommodations will be provided as needed for students with disabilities. Requests for accommodations must be made in writing at the time of application.

One (1) application is required; however the applicant may apply in two (2) arts areas. Students may only “major” in one (1) arts area, though.

Please be sure to check out the “Audition/Portfolio Requirements” tab to ensure all materials are prepped for the audition/portfolio review.

Upon receipt of a completed application packet, applicants will be contacted e-mail to confirm their audition dates and times. Auditions will be held in-person in January 2024. Students will have only one opportunity to audition. A doctor’s note is required to schedule a make-up audition.

Student Selection Processs
Student Selection Process

Professionals in each arts area will evaluate students and place them in one of four categories based on their application, talent, and potential. These categories are: Exemplary, Strong, Acceptable, and Minimal.

Students categorized as Exemplary or Strong will be accepted before students categorized as Acceptable. Students categorized as Minimal will not be accepted.

Parents and students will be notified by e-mail of audition results.

The possible results are as follows:

they passed the audition and they are accepted
-
they passed the audition, but the class is full and they are placed on a waiting list
-
they did not pass the audition.

Score sheets will be kept confidential.
